Almost every website with a user registration process requires that you provide answers to some “security questions” for use in situations where you forget your password. I’m sure everyone has come across at least one of the following examples: What is your mother’s maiden name? What was the name of your elementary school? What is your paternal grandfather’s first...

I updated my favicon. I hope it vaguely resembles a dangling eye. My photoshop abilities are pretty much limited to basic photo manipulation; I have zero drawing skills. That’s why I used an old school “MS Paint” style… Here’s the large version: (brace yourselves!) :D

As a photographer and photoblogger, I’m very annoyed by the state of color accuracy and calibration in modern displays. Take the following image: (click through for larger version) On my old (and cheap) 17” Samsung CRT, three layers of mountain were visible. On my 22” Dell LCD, I can see two layers. And on my laptop display, I just see one massive black mass. (Leave a comment...

There’s a tiny chance you may have noticed that the latest posts on my photoblog included EXIF data indicating the use of a Nikon D70 digital SLR. I don’t own this camera, it actually belongs to my cousin. Her dad, a.k.a. my uncle, whose house I crashed during my wonderful two week trip to Washington D.C. is a professional photographer, so there was a lot of nice gear for me to play...

No photo this week because my computer is messed up, even after a format and clean OS installation. I’ll have big news next week though, stay tuned.

I don’t know which is more sad: my google analytics site usage report, or the fact that I actually set up google analytics for my site

By now you must have realized that I’m a big fan of Android development. You may have been wondering though, what exactly am I developing? Well, today is the day you find out! But first I have to tell you about quub… quub is a service that helps you tell others where you are, what you’re doing and how (or if) you’d like to be contacted. It does this by using sensor data and machine...

Me: “I’m going to write an OnKeyPress handler for the TextEdit that checks for alpha-numeric key presses to see if the user has started typing.” Don: “Can’t you just check the length of the TextEdit text?” Me: “…yeaahhh I guesssss, wow I suck” And that, my friends, is why I need to bring an end to my 24+ hour coding marathons.

[lw]in conundrum
I want to use Ubuntu for a variety of reasons, but I know there’s stuff I’m gonna need in Windows from time to time. Dual-booting obviously sucks, so I’m going with virtualization. I haven’t done much research yet, but VirtualBox appears to be an early strong contender. My dilemma is this: Which should I chose as the host OS, and which as the guest? It seems like people...

To follow up on the previous post, I just read something that made me very happy: “… the AppWidget framework is abstracted in both directions, meaning alternative home screens can also contain widgets. Your widgets can be inserted into any home screen that supports the AppWidget framework.” That’s awesome.

android excitement and worries
I’m extremely excited by all the features being added to the upcoming Android release. On-screen keyboard, UI improvements, and most importantly (for me), new API features, including support for developing homescreen widgets. But I’m also worried about how these types of updates will affect Android devices and the distribution of applications on them. Will all devices always be...

I submitted a paper to the Ubicomp 2009 conference this past Friday. The hours leading to a paper submission can be very stressful. The night after the deadline, I had a dream where I realized that I had forgotten to edit out a specific phrase from the abstract of my submission. I woke up in a state of panic, jumping out of bed to grab my laptop. As I was reaching for the power button, it dawned...
