I updated my favicon. I hope it vaguely resembles a dangling eye.

My photoshop abilities are pretty much limited to basic photo manipulation; I have zero drawing skills. That’s why I used an old school “MS Paint” style… Here’s the large version: (brace yourselves!)

As a photographer and photoblogger, I’m very annoyed by the state of color accuracy and calibration in modern displays. Take the following image:

(click through for larger version)

On my old (and cheap) 17” Samsung CRT, three layers of mountain were visible. On my 22” Dell LCD, I can see two layers. And on my laptop display, I just see one massive black mass. (Leave a comment and tell me how many mountain layers you see.)

Adjusting the display settings can only go so far, since this is an issue of the inherent limitations of various displays. My laptop display has a color gamut of around %70, my desktop LCD is around %80, and most CRTs and professional (>$1000) LCDs are above %90. I can only target my post-processing for one display, which almost always means the results won’t look good on so many others.

If I consider typical laptop displays to be my target (that’s what most people use these days,) I obviously won’t be able to produce the best looking image possible, plus it will look even worse (usually washed out) on better (non-laptop) displays. So far, my processing has been based on my desktop monitor, but that means most of my viewers using laptops are not seeing what I would like them to see.

Doesn’t that suck? :(

I’m back with my photo posts. Over the course of the next few weeks I’ll be publishing photos from my recent trip to San Francisco. These are the first photos from my new camera.
