[lw]in conundrum

I want to use Ubuntu for a variety of reasons, but I know there’s stuff I’m gonna need in Windows from time to time. Dual-booting obviously sucks, so I’m going with virtualization. I haven’t done much research yet, but VirtualBox appears to be an early strong contender.

My dilemma is this: Which should I chose as the host OS, and which as the guest? It seems like people are doing it both ways without much trouble. Right now, the only advantages I can think of for each choice are:

Ubuntu host, Windows guest: Seamless mode seems to work better and is easier to set up. Ubuntu seems less prone to performance degradation over time.

Windows host, Ubuntu guest: Given that I want to “learn” Linux (including the funky config stuff and whatnot, maybe even dabble in compiling my own updates,) this way I’m immune to my computer becoming unbootable due to messing around in Linux.

It seems like the better choice for now is the Windows host. Maybe I’ll switch after I become confidant in my Linux maintenance abilities. Is there anything else I should consider? Any advice in general?
