comment on last quote
I’m reading Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death. The third chapter of the book is called Typographic America, and it’s been my favorite chapter so far. It talks about the high literacy rates in Colonial America, the popularity of books in that period, and generally praises the print-based culture of those times.
Towards the end of the chapter, Postman quotes Richard Hofstader: “The Founding Fathers were sages, scientists, men of broad cultivation, many of them apt in classical learning, who used their wide reading in history, politics, and law to solve the exigent problems of their time.”
Having read that only a couple nights ago is what made the LaPierre quote, which drew cheers from his audience at CPAC, so intriguing. So laughable. So pathetic. So disturbing.
